Smith Street Banco Towers

The Collingwood Action Group (see www.smithstreet.org/cag) have been doing an excellent job in fighting this massive over development and helping to develop an interim structure plan to protect their suburb.

Their latest move was to stage a public rally on the 27/8/2005.

It was a huge success, with the crowd overflowing the footpath and temporarily blocking cars and trams. Hopefully this has sent yet another message to the Planning Minister (Rob Hulls) about the political consequences should this ridiculous development go ahead.

Interestingly, neither the local State ALP Member (Richard Wynne), or the Yarra ALP Mayor (Kay Meadows), or the Yarra ALP ward Councillor (Annabel Barbara) came to the protest. In fact, only two Yarra councillors attended - the strongly supportive Steve Jolly (Socialist Party), and Kathleen Maltzahn.(Greens) - both who should be thanked for their support.

SOS president Ian Quick and committee member Heinz Reitmeier attended, and SOS strongly supports CAG's position. Protectors of Public Lands (Vic) president Julianne Belll and vice president Rod Quantock also supported the demonstration, with Rod doing an excellent job as MC.
